How to be a Modern Day Sophisticated Hippie

Hippie is a term synonymous with the 1960s. In Europe Amsterdam was the hippie capital. The Netherlands had a reputation of a country with widespread tolerance and openness. The United States had Woodstock.

Do these ideas of love, freedom, and joy still hold true today?

Early in Kim’s career of starting Mind-Body Balance, she had a young vibrant creative photographer say you’re a sophisticated hippie. Not sure what that was she seemed to embrace it and agree with her.

Some criteria that seem to be a common thread among the modern-day hippie are;

-that all living organisms have a spirit

-connection with nature

-finding peace with consumerism and capitalism

-reducing exposure to media

-living sustainably

-prioritize living over financial wealth

-schooling alternatives

-flexible schedules

-barefoot footwear

-sit on the floor more because sitting in a chair for long periods of time doesn’t feel good in the body

-when they learn something they tend to travel to the source and learn it experiential

-take vacations off the grid and in silence

-a slower pace of life

-they see opportunities and possibilities everywhere and understand they have choices

-they follow their hearts and understand there is no prescribed path

-the tendency toward LAT- Living Apart Together -relationships

-approach everyone with a smile and as a friend

-looking for freedom to move whichever way they want

-in an age of segregation, they enjoy meeting people of like-minded souls.

-a universal goal of love and peace

Are we so disconnected from our environments that we no longer care about nature, eating poison for food, are we all in burnout, are we only surviving?

Where is the joy in this?

You can shape your life any way you want?

Kim gets a lot of wisdom from trees, she loves to place her hammock under one and look up at the architecture of the tree. As she lay there and rest she can see things she had forgotten. Every tree, Every blade of grass, every breeze has a soul. Everything around us breathes, talks and lives. The world is not our enemy but our greatest friend. The minute you want things you lose your freedom.- she wants things like good food, books, travel, safe home with a beautiful view, designer clothes, but when you get to the end of the day are these things we possess completely irrelevant? Perhaps the balance of level-headedness and spiritedness describes the perfect modern hippie.

For Kim this really ties into the Yamas and Niyamas as well as the whole yogic lifestyle (koshas, gunas, kleshas, samskaras, etc.) living with ethical perceptive, not getting hung up on the story, and continued life of self-study.
